Common mistakes

  • Leaving the seat at the wrong height. If the handles sit well above your shoulders you start from a forced position and lose range. Set the seat so the handles line up with your shoulders.
  • Letting the shoulder blades come off the pad and arching to press. The machine fixes the path, so the compensation lands on the lower back. Keep the upper back on the pad and the ribs down.
  • Snapping the elbows into lockout at the top. Slamming into lockout under load stresses the joint and unloads the delt. Stop just short of full extension.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the machine shoulder press work?
It mainly works the front deltoid, with the side deltoid and triceps as the main helpers. The upper trapezius joins at the end of the press. Seated with the back supported and the handles guided, the trunk and shoulder stabilizers do very little, so nearly all the fatigue lands on the shoulder itself.
How do you set the seat height on the machine shoulder press?
Adjust the seat until the handles sit at shoulder height or just below, with the elbows near 90 degrees in the starting position. If the handles start too high, the range shortens and you lose the most useful part; if they start too low, the shoulder begins from a strained position. Rest your whole back on the pad and your feet on the floor before pressing.
Machine or dumbbell shoulder press: which one should you choose?
With dumbbells each arm stabilizes its own weight, which demands more control and builds more overall strength, but limits the load and tires the stabilizers first. The machine fixes the path and lets you add weight gradually without worrying about balance. For beginners, the machine teaches the pattern safely; with experience, dumbbells add what the machine does not ask for.
How many reps and how much weight to start with on the machine shoulder press?
A common range for learning the movement is sets of 10 to 12 reps with a load that leaves one or two reps in reserve. Start near the bottom of the stack, check that you can lower the handles to shoulder height and press up without arching the lower back, and add one plate per session as long as the technique stays the same.
