Incline Chest Press Machine: how the movement is executed

How it is executed

  1. Sit on the incline chest press machine with your back fully supported and feet flat on the floor.
  2. Adjust the seat so the handles are at upper-chest level.
  3. Grip the handles and press them upward and forward until your arms are almost fully extended.
  4. Lower the weight slowly until your elbows are bent and you feel a stretch in the chest, then repeat.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the seat too low. The handles should line up with your upper chest; at neck height the press turns almost vertical and the shoulder absorbs it.
  • Letting the shoulders roll forward at the end of the press. Lifting the shoulder blades off the pad loads the joint in its most vulnerable position. Keep the blades down and together from start to finish.
  • Stopping the lowering halfway. If the handles never come back to chest level the upper chest never reaches a stretch. Reduce the load until you can complete the range under control.

Frequently asked questions

Which muscles does the incline chest press machine work?
The target is the clavicular portion of the pectoralis major, the upper chest, which gets more work the more inclined the push is. The front deltoid and the triceps assist as secondary muscles. Because the machine fixes the path, the shoulder stabilizers work less than with dumbbells, which lets you focus the effort on the chest.
How high should the seat be on the incline chest press machine?
Set the seat so the handles sit at upper-chest height, just below the collarbones, with your back against the pad. If they sit higher, the push becomes almost vertical and the shoulder takes it; if they sit at belly height, the work shifts to the mid chest. Try one unloaded rep before starting the set.
What is the difference between the incline machine press and the incline dumbbell press?
The machine fixes the path and holds the weight at both ends of the range, so you can train close to failure safely without the technique falling apart. With dumbbells each arm controls its own path, the range is longer and the stabilizers work harder. Many coaches start a client on the machine and move to dumbbells once the pattern is solid.
Is the incline chest press machine a good exercise for beginners?
Yes, it is one of the best entries into the incline press. The guided path removes the problem of balancing the load and lets you focus on feeling the upper chest and controlling the descent. A usual starting range is 10 to 15 reps with a load that allows the full range, letting the handles return to chest level on every rep.
