Strength and endurance together: how to keep them from interfering
For twenty years the advice was the same: if you want muscle, do not run. The evidence behind that recommendation has been updated, and the largest meta-analysis on the subject found interference in only one of the three adaptations measured. Knowing which one changes how you build the week.

Almost everyone wants both: to lift more and not be out of breath climbing stairs. The classic objection is that the two compete, that cardio eats muscle, and that you have to choose. That objection has a real origin in the literature and a rather different updated version.
It is worth sorting the question before answering it, because interference is not one thing. Maximal strength, muscle size and explosive strength are three separate adaptations, and the meta-analyses measure them separately precisely because they do not behave alike.
Where the fear came from
The work that fixed the idea in everyone's head is the meta-analysis by Wilson and colleagues published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research in 2012, which pooled 21 studies and 422 effect sizes to identify which components of endurance work damage strength adaptations.
It found two concrete things. The first was about modality: training strength alongside running, but not alongside cycling, produced significant decrements in both hypertrophy and strength. The proposed explanation was the muscle damage from running's eccentric component and the amount of muscle mass involved.
The second was about dose. Negative correlations appeared between the frequency of endurance work and strength, hypertrophy and power outcomes (between −0.26 and −0.35), and considerably stronger correlations with the duration of each endurance session (between −0.29 and −0.75). The longer the cardio session, the worse the strength result.
That is where the popular rule came from. And as usually happens, the rule outlived the nuance: people remembered "cardio kills gains" and forgot that the effect depended on which cardio, how much of it, and how often.

What the largest and most recent review found
In 2022, Schumann and colleagues published an updated systematic review in Sports Medicine covering 43 studies and 1,090 participants, comparing concurrent training against strength training alone. The numbers change the picture considerably.
For maximal strength the SMD was −0.06, with a confidence interval crossing zero. For hypertrophy it was −0.01. Both are, in practice, zero: adding endurance work to the programme cost nothing in maximal strength or in muscle size.
The exception showed up in explosive strength, with an SMD of −0.28 and statistical significance. There, interference is real, and it is the adaptation that matters most to anyone who jumps, sprints or changes direction in a sport.
The moderator analyses add a finding worth underlining, because it contradicts the inherited belief: there were no differences between cycling and running, nor by training status, age or frequency. The only moderation that appeared was proximity — the drop in explosive strength was more pronounced when both happened in the same session, and eased when they were separated by at least three hours.

The order within a session
When both have to fit the same day and there is no room to separate them, the question becomes which goes first. There is a meta-analysis dedicated to exactly that: Eddens, van Someren and Howatson published it in Sports Medicine in 2017, pooling 10 studies, 20 groups and 245 subjects.
The result is specific. Placing resistance work before endurance work improved lower-body dynamic strength by a weighted mean difference of 6.91%, with a confidence interval of 1.96 to 11.87 and statistical significance.
Beyond that, order moved nothing. Hypertrophy differed by 1.15% without significance, lower-body static strength was essentially unchanged, and neither maximal aerobic capacity nor body fat showed relevant differences.
Translated: if your goal is muscle size or general health, order is a preference. If lower-body dynamic strength matters to you, the bar goes first.

What the week looks like in practice
With those three papers on the table, planning becomes fairly simple and considerably less restrictive than the topic's reputation suggests.
If the goal is hypertrophy or maximal strength, there is nothing special to protect. You can run, cycle, row or swim, in the same session or on separate days, without the pooled evidence showing a cost. The one thing still standing from the 2012 work is that very long and very frequent endurance sessions correlated with worse outcomes, which is consistent with what we already know about accumulated fatigue and recovery.
If the goal includes power — a sport with jumps, sprints or changes of direction — separating is worth it. Three hours between the two is the threshold that shows up in Schumann's moderation, and a different day is cleaner still.
And if everything has to fit in the same block of time, strength goes first. It costs nothing to implement and it is the one point where order demonstrably mattered.
On the belief that cardio ruins muscle, there is a longer treatment in does cardio kill gains.
- Hypertrophy or maximal strength: train both with no special restrictions.
- Power or sport: separate by at least three hours, ideally a day.
- Forced into one session: strength goes before endurance work.
- Watch total endurance dose before worrying about its modality.
Interference survives in explosive strength. For muscle size and maximal strength, the current meta-analyses put it at zero.
What to take away
The interference effect exists, but it is much smaller and much more specific than the story goes. Across 43 studies and 1,090 participants, maximal strength and hypertrophy ended up indistinguishable from those of people who only lifted.
What is worth protecting is explosive strength, and it is protected with distance: separate the two sessions by at least three hours, or put them on different days outright. When that is not possible, putting strength first recovers part of the difference.
That kind of decision — what moves and what does not when the week's availability changes — is exactly where a routine written into a spreadsheet ages badly.
